Somebody Please Explain To Me

how Bartolo Colon had a better year than Johan Santana.

Colon: 222.2 IP, 215 H, 26 HR, 157 Ks, .254 BAA, 1.16 WHIP, 3.48 ERA.

Santana: 231.2 IP, 180 H, 22 HR, 238 Ks, .210 BAA, 0.97 WHIP, 2.87 ERA.

It's not even close. Santana was better in every single meaningful category.

Colon's bullpen and run support was better, so he had more wins.

Mariano Rivera was a better choice than Colon. Cliff Lee had roughly the same year as Colon. Colon won in a landslide.

The tyrrany of W's -- a statistic of middling individual performance for pitchers -- continues to lead to absolutely horrible awards decisions.
